Environmental Management
The Wahnapitae First Nation proactively participates in Environmental Management. The Environmental Coordinator is responsible for implementing environmental programs and services for the community in hopes of minimizing any environmental impacts. The Environmental Coordinator actively represents Wahnapitae First Nation on the Xstrata Nickel/WFN Environmental Working Group and the Quadra FNX/WFN Environmental Committee.
- Water Source Protection - Wahnapitae First Nation also participates in the Greater Sudbury Water Source Protection process and sits on the Greater Sudbury Water Source Protection Committee. The Source protection committee has recently completed their DRAFT assessment report related to drinking water source protection for the area. - Waste Management Initiatives - The Environmental Department has been also pursuing waste management initiatives in hopes of minimizing the environmental footprint of Wahnapitae First Nation. As a result of these efforts, curb side recycling and garbage pick-up has been implemented.
- Summer Science Series - Also, the Environmental Department will be working with the Wahnapitae First Nation youth program to develop a “Summer Science” youth capacity development series. - Geographic Information Systems (GIS) – The Environmental Department utilizes GIS to plan and manage community based projects. The GIS system has been used to create community base maps, community location maps, drainage maps, historical maps, housing project maps, contour maps, topography maps and many more. The Wahnapitae First Nation Geospatial Applications Specialist is Nicole Recollet. We have been busy digitizing and acquiring data from a wide variety of sources.
